I've dabbled in sound effect design to some extent as a hobby-musician, so when three nights before Halloween I saw this old alien mask at the salvation army, my gears began turning. I came up with this little scenario for my girlfriend and I to act out.
I achieved my goal to make a pre-teen cry, but got a little extra when a toddler broke down in the grips of horror, crying, and began backing down my front steps. One of the older children was extra-inquisitive and flashed a light in my face, "You're a real person, right?" To which I replied, "No". The dialogue I recorded myself, pitched it down, and then mixed it with water-gurgling to give it some thick wetness. I used a Wii Controller synced up to a laptop and some software, translating button pushes to play .wav dialogue snippets.
I achieved some disturbing realism with the sounds thanks to heavy reverb on the opening scream/saw/guts bit, and got that extra bit of size by placing it further down the hall, while the speaker for my voice was mounted above the door (which you can see slightly from this angle).
Children immediately in front of the door saw only white medical drapes behind us, which helped the illusion (thanks to my sister for that addition).
My sister, her boyfriend, and my dad valiantly act through this demonstration, and the result is a fine cheese. Everyone had fun watching the few children we truly terrified leave pale-faced and disturbed. Ha! Thanks everybody, it was a fun night!
Next year I think I'm going to go heavy on some props, and some cross-lighting for mood. The green wash did its job, but I think there's room to make this even creepier!
