Midway Atoll, Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument, Territory of the United States of America, North Pacific Ocean.

May 9, 2010

A non-breeding pair of black footed albatrosses dances an intricate courtship pas de deux on a sandy ridge at sunset. Black footed albatrosses perform such a lovely, intricate dance filled with wing extensions, standing on their tippy toed webbed feet, and calling or bill clacking with abandon. It is a performance that one never forgets.

The black footed albatross is listed as Endangered by the IUCN Red List.

Images of Midway Atoll's albatrosses plus other birds photographed by Gina Ruttle aka Whalegeek are available for sale as cards, framed prints, canvas mountings and posters at RedBubble.com through her Whalegeek portfolio http://www.redbubble.com/people/whale... . I welcome your visit to my portfolio to view my whales, bears, birds and other photographic art.

  • Very nice video! I just uploaded a video of laysans dancing up in Princeville this winter.

  • Thank you very much for having a look at one of my albatross videos. I just viewed your Laysans dancing up a storm in the yard. It is wonderful! At Midway I so enjoy the raucous sounds of dancing albatrosses. In case you are interested I penned an article about Midway Atoll, with heavy emphasis on the birds/marine debris problem. Google "Wisdom Returns To Midway Atoll" if interested. It contains many images plus videos/links on the birds. Cheers! Gina
