It was supposed to have been an innocent snowboard trade between friends. But now 20-year-old Brittni Carlini is dead and two men are in jail for allegedly killing her, burning her body and burying it.

According to an Albuquerque Police Department criminal complaint, Carlini went to Ryan Vigil's West Side home on Thursday night to exchange a snowboard. But the visit turned sour when Carlini, Vigil and another man, Christopher Midyette, began to argue about an upcoming snowboarding trip. Carlini left, but, before she got to her car, she was attacked with a baseball bat by one of the men. They then drove her body to a mesa in Rio Rancho where they doused it with gasoline and lit it. Then they buried her. Midyette, 19, of Rio Rancho, and Vigil, 19, of Albuquerque, now face murder charges. Carlini's parents reported her missing Friday after not hearing from her since she left for Vigil's house the night before. On Saturday, Adrian Montoya, whom police describe as either Vigil's stepfather or his mother's fiance, called police and said that Vigil's mother saw him throw a baseball bat over a fence in their backyard, remove bloody carpet from the back of his pickup and put a shovel in their garbage can. Montoya said that, when he asked Vigil what he was doing, he told him it was because he and a friend had killed a javelina and butchered it. Police investigating the call found the bat in a neighbor's yard and smelled bleach in the bed of Vigil's truck. The complaint said Vigil's mother told police that her son and Midyette have hung out in the past and "caused a lot of trouble." Carlini had listed Vigil as a friend on her Facebook page, and her Myspace page says she attended Central New Mexico Community College. A family member at the Carlini home said the family is struggling and did not wish to be interviewed. According to the complaint, Vigil said he had gone outside to meet Carlini, then the two of them joined Midyette inside to talk about the snowboarding trip they were planning. Vigil said that, at some point, they began to argue, but the complaint doesn't elaborate. Carlini left. Vigil said that, before she got into her vehicle, Midyette hit her in the head at least twice, maybe three times, with a baseball bat. Vigil told police that, when he asked Midyette why he did it, Midyette said, "I got your back." The complaint did not mention whether Midyette was interviewed or, if so, what he said. Vigil told police that he and Midyette drove Carlini's body to the mesa near Northern Meadows in Rio Rancho and burned and buried it. He said he and Midyette then returned to Vigil's home, where they drove Carlini's vehicle to a neighborhood in Albuquerque's Northeast Heights. APD spokeswoman Nadine Hamby said Sunday night that police recovered a body they believe to be Carlini's in the location where Vigil told them to look.

Metropolitan Court Judge Daniel Ramczyk raised the bonds Monday on Ryan Vigil and Christopher Midyette in the brutal killing of Brittni Carlini.

Bond had originally been set at $300,000 cash or surety. But Ramczyk cited the "horrific nature of the allegations" and ordered both men be held on $1 million cash-only bonds.

A background investigator noted that Vigil had spent two years in YDDC on an arson charge.
