  • Have a listen to "Theme from S'Express" by S'Express and you'll hear 125s going through in the background. The reason being is that you can hear the back engine go through after the front.

  • @lewis72 OK thanks for that....Bob

  • This brings back great memorys of watching the trains leaving edinburgh when i was a kid, that would be 1985, the smell, the sound, the vibrations. For me it was the best times in my life. And then the train home at the end of the day was so good. I couldn't sleep that night for thinking about all that I had seen. I still look at trains now with the same thoughts... almost 30 years on. Sometimes I forgot to keep my eyes on the road while driving too. I'm much better now though. Thanks very much

  • @nairnmonster It's always a great pleasure when your work evokes happy memories from a viewers childhood. Thank you for watching, and leaving such nice comments....Bob

  • I take it the whine was from huge turbos or summat?

  • @neilb229 I'm not sure, but engines made by Paxman for the HST's and Class 56 diesels had that distinctive sound....Bob

  • @neilb229 The scream is from a napier turbo. What can also be heard sometimes is the marston fan which can make a loud whine too

  • @lewis72 These units have been around for many years and have given excellent service To ensure the carry on for many more years the re-engine into a more efficient unit was an essential part of that, although unfortunately like many modern engines, they have no character...Thanks for watching....Bob

  • When I wa about 6, we used to travel from Great Yarmouth to Hull for Christams to see the Grand parents. Now, I think it was at Doncastor station where they would go through at 125 mph and the noise was absolutely immense.

I guess operation costs have decided the new engine units. I mean, they used to make V12 Jags, now we're getting 4 cylinder diesels !!

  • It is a shame but it had to happen. Railways are not in the entertainment business and so efficiency matters more here.
