Woody and Anne are buried in the Union Cemetary, just north of the OSU campus. Whenever I visit, their headstone looks like an OSU gift shop-OSU banners, buckeyes- a great tribute to a man who has been gone for 24 years now.

Former President Nixon was one of the speakers at Woody's funeral. They'd
been friends for over 30years. Nixon said "The first time we met, I wanted to talk
football, and Woody wanted to talk foreign policy. You know Woody....we talked
foreign policy."

Woody enlisted in the US Navy seven months before Pearl Harbor.
He could have spent the war at Great Lakes, but he volunteered for sea duty.
Four years later, he was Lieutenant Commander Hayes, the Commanding Officer
of the destroyer escort USS Rinehart.
-
A friend of Woody's once kidded him that Woody was such a workaholic that he'd probably die on the 50 yard line of an Ohio State-Michigan game, with Ohio State
winning. And if Ohio State wasn't winning, then he wouldn't die. Woody thought
that that was so funny he repeateded it at a sports banquet- and brought down
the house. Some people from outside of Ohio seemed to think he was serious-
& that Woody had lost it. Not so. Just Woody enjoying a good laugh.
RIP Old Friend.

Woody was known for his bad temper-but I'll never forget what he said to the doctors at OSU hospital when they told him that why removing gall stones, they had left a sponge inside him-so they were going to have to put him through major abdominal surgery a 2nd time in a few days. (Woody was in his late 60s at the time)
Said Woody "That's strange...in 28 years here as a football coach,*I* never made a mistake!"
-
Seven straight wins against Michigan.
Somewhere Woody is smiling.
-
I never knew a man who cared more about people and less about money than Woody Hayes. In the last 8years of his life, it was not *illegal* to hold a charitable event in Central Ohio without Woody being in attendance- but it simply was *not* done.
-
People who badmouth Woody are people who did not know him.
Those of us who had the good fortune to know him, loved him... warts and all!
