WROC-TV (Channel 8) reports on the final phase of construction at Rochester Institute of Technology's new Global Village residential and retail complex.
It has taken 300 workers nearly 14 months, and RIT's Global Village is almost complete.
"We needed to replace some of our Riverknoll housing some of which is still in service," says Jim Yarrington.
The project has a hefty price tag: $55 million. When contractors are finished, more than 400 students will call Global Village home. While it might look like just another dorm on the outside, inside students will enjoy some of the most luxury dorm housing around.
"They're apartment style units and suites. Most of the bedrooms are single student bedrooms. Some are doubles," says Yarrington.
Global Village will include a fitness studio, bank, post office and a market for students.
"More and more of our students are from all 50 states and from abroad and we see ourselves as marketing to a global audience," says Yarrington.
RIT is working to ensure the village will be green too. It wants the facility to be LEED certified.
"We do alot of things from controlling waste water, runoff from the building," says contractor Mike Youngblut.
"It really is a facility that knits the campus and our program all together in a living and learning environment," says Yarrington.
RIT plans to install an ice rink and a sidewalk that automatically melts snow in the winter. The first student moves in on August 18th.
