I first saw Daniela Dessi at the Met Opera in 2002-3 in Butterfly. Although the voice was too small at that time, she gave 200% to the drama and her final scene was BREATHTAKING. It sounds like the voice is quite a lot bigger here (and lustrous!) but the orchestra of Butterfly is 3x the size of this one. She's quite an actress, nevertheless!
This opera forms part of Puccini's "Il trittico" each one a short one act opera, performed consecutively. Namely, Il Tabarro, Sour Angelica and Gianni Schicchi. As to why the operas are not performed very often, I dont know. Perhaps its because, apart from the famous aria from Gianni Schicchi "O mio babbino caro" or, O my beloved father, there are not really any of the beautiful arias we associate with Puccini. Just a thought.
Great post! I love this opera, just discovered it and although I only know Daniela Dessi from Tosca I can already say that I really like her voice. She totally fits this role, a great suor.
Dear coloraturafan don't u have the finale also? I would like to compare hers with the frittoli's one.

Yes, you are probably right, but as soon as one discovers these operas, they count to one's favourites very fast. :-)

Oh this aria breaks me every time. The Scotto version is wonderful. In all honestly I have to control myself to get through the work. Thanks.
