Over 350 people gathered at the State Building in Downtown Santa Rosa on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010. Individuals were protesting additional state budget cuts to disability services. "We've taken our share of cuts already" was the theme of the protest. Ed, field representative to Assembly member Noreen Evans, speaks to the crowd to say that Noreen will support their cause.
Individuals were deeply concerned that additional state budget cuts would affect their ability to live on their own, keep their jobs, and be independent, contributing members of the community.
BI already has suffered a $470,000 cut in state revenues under a 3 percent cut approved by the legislature and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger last year and continuing this year.
Now the sate Department of Development Services is proposing another 1.25 percent across-the board cut for our agency and others, Cami Weaver, CEO of Becoming Independent said.
Weaver said a 1.25 percent cut would increase revenue shortfalls by another $156,000. Added to an additional $250,000 revenue cut due to state-mandated closure days that would bring BIs total financial hit to $876,000.
