For a long time I wondered if it would be possible to cut a 4x4x4 Master Cube / Rubik's Revenge down to create a working 4x4x4 Ball puzzle. Obviously it can be done by building onto the cube but what about just cutting it down? When I did finally attempt it I didn't own a Dremel so it was all done by saw, file and sand paper. After several hours I got my answer. Yes it's possible but the resulting puzzle is very poor. It really doesn't move very well at all. It holds together but only just. This is because the parts have much reduced areas of contact with each other.
For colouring I used Rubik's Cube style stickers in a pattern of eight circles.
In 2008 I decided to once again make a 4x4x4 ball (see my other video) but this time I used an Eastsheen Cube and built up instead of cut down. The resulting puzzle was much better quality and I called it 4x4x4 Ball (2008).
