http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/abraham/detail?blogid=95&entry_id=45719 - I know you're scratching your head over that title because you know of the now-late Chicago Sun-Times Columnist as a conservative and pugilist, but "helped kids grow?" Yes.

  • Robert Novak was at the opposite side of the political spectrum on most issues compared to my thinking, however like anybody, he shouldn't be pigeon-holed as evidenced by his positions on the Middle East and 911. He was an independent thinker with a life beyond political issues as you illustrated. Several years ago, CNN aired a story about his life history and I found it very interesting (beyond his career). For the most part he was also a professional ("old school" and in a good way).

  • I applaud his work with the urban poor and inner-city powerless. His work with the Youth Leadership Foundation has undoubtedly accomplished much good in behalf of many.

However, I too considered him a politically represhensible figure. His actions in publishing the identity of a federal intelligence officer - and working covertly with Bush administration officials to do so as part of a vendetta - was unconscionable, and tantamount to treason.

  • That was a nice post.

  • Good Stuff - - I never knew - WOW!

  • Best thing novak ever did was die. Good riddance.

  • Zennie, I did not know about Novak's involvement with the Youth Leadership Foundation. I love to hear stories like this: celebrities quietly helping causes they believe in, and not using those causes to loudly boast of their own goodness before the world. R.I.P. Bob Novak.

  • Strange, I did not know him then, that friend of mine. I did not even show him then, one friendly sign. But cursed him for the ways he had, to make me see, my envy for the praise he had, for praising me. I would have rid the earth of him once in my pride, I never knew the worth of him... until he died.

    -E.A. Robinson

  • Good bye Robert Novak, one of the greatest Illinois Grads ever!
