Conway Towing and a home across the street caught fire Thursday morning, March 25.

The first call came out shortly after 11:30 a.m. Thursday — structure fire at Conway Towing.

Harbor Springs Area Fire Department and Resort-Bear Creek Fire Department were the first agencies on scene to tackle the massive blaze — the source of which has not yet been determined.

At about noon Thursday, the scene at the towing business, located at 3101 U.S. 31 in Conway, was intense.

Flames shot through the roof of the building, black smoke billowed into the sky, and a red sport utility vehicle and tow truck near the building were engulfed in flames.

Firefighters crouched near both the front and rear of the building, clutching their water hoses in an attempt to contain the blaze — but it seemed to be too late.

One large explosion occurred in the structure around 12:15 p.m., and then another minutes later, sent gigantic fireballs into the sky.

Debris fell like snow into the roadway.

Fire trucks, in response, honked their horns three times as a warning to back away from the blaze.

Around 12:30 p.m., firefighters from Resort-Bear Creek began shooting water from their aerial truck at the business rooftop.

At 1:25 p.m., a report on police radio indicated that another structure across the street from Conway Towing was ablaze.

As of 2:30 p.m., firefighters remained on the scenes of the Conway Towing blaze as well as the house fire across the street. U.S. 31 remained closed between Barney and West Conway roads.

  • So sad for these ppl. The truck my husband was driving caught fire once. He was lucky to get out. I hope no one was hurt and I hope they where able to recover some of their lost. Time's are hard for tow owners and any loss hurts. Peace to them.

  • The wind will kill ya every time.

  • Wow! That is so sad. The owners were great people. I hope they rebuild the place and keep the business going.
