@GrandMasterKolbasa no doubt. But it's the threat of an armed population that forces them to take more subtle, insidious, efforts to build their hegemony.
But I feel your observation is incomplete, restricting guns on the citizens doesn't restrict the ones that corrupt officials or even black market gangsters wield, does prohibition work anywhere? In light of that, I'd opt for arming the innocent.
Borrowing from govt, threats of violence is a great deterrent.
