A clip of Paul Chek presenting a 2-day Scientific Stretching workshop in NSW, Australia. Note: If you are tight in the hips you will find it hard to keep the lumbar curve and pelvis tilted forward. To help maintain the curve in the lumbar spine you can tape your low back as a stretching aid from the level of the bottom rib to the sacrum (while you are standing with good posture). After being taped, perform the stretch and if you feel the tape pull as you lean forward into the stretch, this indicates you are not holding the proper spine position and you need to tip your pelvis forward to reduce tension on the tape. This modification is very important for anyone with a history of back pain because it prevents you from over-stretching the low back during what is intended to be a hip stretch.

  • been doing this exact stretch since i was 12 years old (34 now), didnt know Paul invented it... dont think my coaches knew either, lol. Still love this guy.

  • @CoachFrank203 - yes it's a great stretch - note that we did not say that Paul invented it, he's simply showing people how to do it, for those who don't know how. Thanks for the comment @CoachFrank203 - we love Paul too!

  • Wait, I think my question was answered in the last few seconds of the video. Is this correct? If so, what if we don't have this kind of resource available? Could you direct me to any other videos that you have or resources that you know that could let one work themselves into this stretch position?

  • @Ronnock, yes question answered at 4:54. A great resource is Paul Chek's 'The Golf Biomechanic's Manual' which has excellent sections on stretching, functional exercise, strength training and power training that can be applied to nearly all sports. You can order this from The C.H.E.K Institute (USA/UK/International) or HQH (South Pacific).

  • Good stretch, good cueing but it did not show anything new.

  • @TrainerONeill - With all due respect, we did not claim to show anything new. We are simply sharing a clip of one of Paul's workshops.

  • Umm That tingling in the foot is due to Strangling the blood vessels and cutting off the blood supply to the muscle thru the hip!! Also This Stretch has been around for MANY Years Before Paul!!!! And There is a MUCH Easier way of doing it WITHOUT stressing out the muscle. People Remember that Muscle can only do 2 things- Contract or Relax!! And IF you are leaning on the muscle it has to CONTRACT!!!. Try this laying on your Back to be MUCH more effective and safer!!!

  • Those who disregard held positions and call them static stretching do not understand the role of proprio-sensory mechanisms being the number one body-based input to the CNS. The proprioceptors need time to let go as you increase the length of muscle chains. There is nothing static in the Universe, all phenomena are nothing other than movement and change. This includes slow change.

  • why are people paying money to be learning static stretches? they have been proven to be innefective in loosening up anything. throw in some big words and a fool will soon be parted from his money

  • @HQHMarketing Thanks! I'll definitely get that manual as soon as I can.

  • What is a good way to work into this stretch for those who aren't flexible enough to get into this position?

  • Fantastic - thanks for the extra pointers for this stretch.
