A new revolutionary invention has been designed to cancel out all the high frequency drill noises that upsets so many people. Basically a microphone records the drill sound and removes the sound, electronically. This development was used in the 2nd world war, when microphones were placed near helicopter rotor blades to do a very similar piece of signal processing, and then played back 180 degrees out of phase.

This new device allows patients to listen to music on an MP3 player, while the sound of the drill is blanked out.
Patients are, though, still able to hear the dentist's voice because not all sounds are filtered out.
