Reconstructing the customs in Afghanistan

No country can function properly without good governance, without an administration which is able to offer the services to its people at the central or sub-national level.
The EU has been contributing to the Afghan national budget providing the State financial means to pay the salaries of tens of thousands of teachers, doctors, civil servants and policemen. The reconstruction of a modern custom system is now enabling Afghanistan to uphold the rule of law at its borders and raise important revenues from trade.
The border crossing point at Torkham, the main transit for people and goods between Pakistan and Afghanistan, has been completed in 2007 and other works are ongoing on the northern border.
