So some videos say just put a dot and then put the heat sink on and let that do the spreading. Which method is more effective?
-
What if there's gaps in between the underside of the cpu cooler? Would an even spread lead to gaps?

I agree with spreading the compound with the spoon and leaving the edges uncovered.

I like touching myself with a plastic spoon.

@Jonedcc small x in the middle... Don't spread

If you're using a high quality heatsink cooler there is actually no need to spread out the thermal paste. Just put a pea size on the processor and put the cooler on top of the processor and move the cooler a little to the left and right and screw it down. it will spread itself out with good aftermarket coolers.

I like these new cpu fans
Dropping a pea size can lead to uneven spread. In my tutorial I explain a Very thin even layer does the trick. My temps are below the sensor limit (32) at idle.

I would, but everything I video is something I purchase; I wouldn't mind getting sponsored or them sending me products to review!
