I was a little disappointed after playing Vectorman on DGEN, another PSP Genesis emulator. It has problems keeping a steady framerate even on its performance mode, and you must turn the sound off if you want things to be smooth most of the time.

Then I found Picodrive, which has a version that works on PSP Slim, and the performance was so good I had to make a video of it. I love playing these old favourites of mine, and I think now I can finally retire my Genesis. Picodrive runs Vectorman at 100% speed with sound on. It features real-time save/load, but unfortunately lacks DGEN's ability to skip frames quickly. This means I can't get through those long intro movies quickly, but the performance more than makes up for it. The only slowdowns you see here (blowing up TVs, etc) were actually present in the original game as well.

My skill on here isn't quite as good as I'd like because I was playing through the camera for much of the video. I miss a couple of stupid jumps, etc... not the emulator's fault.

Video recorded on PSP Slim, custom firmware 3.90 M33 modded using a Pandora Battery.

  • So, to summarize:

    1) You get the "corrupt" error because Sony hates you.

    2) To flash the firmware you need two things: a Pandora Battery and a Magic Memory Card.

    3) To make a Pandora battery, watch a Youtube tutorial or buy one pre-made.

    4) To make a "Magic Memory Stick" (which loads the custom firmware onto your PSP) run the "totalnewbieinstaller" thing and follow its instructions TO THE LETTER.

    5) Insert MMC, THEN Pandora. PSP will power on by itself, then shut off a minute later. Done!

  • To install custom firmware, google "TOTALNewbieasyInstaller Pandorasmenu" WITHOUT THE SPACE. This is the tool I used to flash my PSP.

You will also need a "Pandora Battery". There are videos on youtube which show how to modify a regular battery (you have to take it apart and break a pin off a chip, being VERY careful). You can also buy a special pre-made Pandora battery from lots of sites.

A Pandora Battery makes the PSP think it's in a service center and loads whatever firmware you give it.

  • Just to be clear, I'm not saying DGEN is a bad emulator. DGEN has some other features that Picodrive lacks, like the "fast forward" that lets you skip long dialogues and intros you've seen before. But for demanding games like Vectorman, Picodrive is the only choice. DGEN's just too slow.

Regarding "corrupt file" errors, you need to install custom firmware. It's not the easiest thing to do... Try asking your friends if they know anyone who's modded their PSP, then ask them to do it for you.

  • just get dgen v1.70 for slim. it works perfectly trust me.

  • I've got dgen 1.7, It does run it alright but only if I turn the sound off, and this is even with the cpu at 333 and in "fast" rather than "accurate" mode emulation.

Maybe I'll make a comparison video, that was my original intention actually I just didn't bother.

  • wow this emulator is so fucking great, thank you!

  • dgen or pecdrive do not runn megadrive roms

    what can i use?

  • I send my sega genesis to my cousins in a 3rd world country around 9 years ago and last year i was there and the games are still there so that makes me owner of the game still right?

  • Actually I love Picodrive because it can perfectly emulate any Genesis games, not only that but it can play Sega CD games. The creator or the person working on it MAY include 32X in the future but at this time, he says theres only 1 game, he would play on 32X emulator and its Knuckles Chaotix.

  • where to i put the games??

  • does picofrive have sound?

  • thnx man 4 the vid, picodrive runs so much smoother than dgen (it might hav been the dgen I had but 4 now im sticking wit picodrive)
