This is a gameplay vid of Soul Calibur on the Sega Dreamcast.

I've just got it on the default difficulty setting. I didn't have the right VMU inserted, and I didn't feel like bothering with it, so it's all on default settings.

I'm a little rusty, so please forgive my suckyness.

  • Really impressive for a Dreamcast game

  • Especially since it was a launch Dreamcast game as well, and it's still look great.

Looked better? Really? Cause i have both games and half of the things the Dreamcast pulls in this game are nowhere to be found on Tekken tag tournment. More Polys, more processing crunching effects, more detail...Yotoriyama team leader for this game and Tekken tag tournment said this game. as it is it would have been impossible to do on the ps2. Why? Simple, the Dc has a more efficient GPU and a hell of a lot more ram.

  • @teh2Dgamer Tekken Tag did not look as good as Soul calibur. The character models where shit and most of the backgrounds composed for still bmp pictures in TT. Where as the backgrounds are true 3d renditions in SC.

  • Its actually a shame sega died - this was the one killer game on dreamcast- i'd much rather them still in the console wars than microsoft-

  • @DSDMovies I think is the anti-aliasing, higher resolution and constant fluid fps, that's why the SC on Dreamcast looks stunning.

Shame this console only lasted 2 years and a half, who knows how much more would've been acomplished with such amazing hardware

  • This was the best looking game ever made at the time. And that didn't change for a long time after. It was SO amazing when it was new, I couldn't believe it. I spent hours in the character viewer looking at the details. Not only does it look incredible in its own right, compared to what had come before (PSone, N64) it was like we'd skipped a generation of hardware. Even great looking PS2 games don't have that certain crisp quality that SC has, though its more powerful overall.

  • i have soulclaibur but i lost the bloody disk D:

  • @Clesarie Well, some of SC's backgrounds were all 2D- but this is purely a relic of porting from a far weaker system (Namco System 12). Can't expect the devs to fully remodel everything. There's a stage set in winter, can't remember much, but the level is basically the fighting platform and a surrounding skymap (or sky/building/whateveryouwanttocallit).

  • @fiaisguy Obviously SC2 and SC3 paved through just fine though. Although, I don't think I'm alone in saying SC2 took quite a hit in texture detail in spots and its polygon expansions weren't anything fierce. Sony's hype train, I swear. And SC3 slows down quite a bit because Namco felt the need to spam post processing effects all over it. And there's still some textures that don't hold up well.

  • Can't believe how good it looks today.

  • @MTGNoobma I didnt turn it into a fan boy fight. I just stated facts. Appeal to the eye is secondary in videogames, to some people its all about the gameplay. Like i said i own both systems and both games at stake here, and SC is way more impressive that Tekken Tag Tournment. Someone else turned into a ps2 vs Dc fight, not me. The FACT is the dc had more advantages than the ps2 on a hardware level, despite the common misinformed opinions around here. The REAL diff is that SC is a lot better.

  • @fiaisguy

Any kid can look at the "Facts" and then look at the REAL DIFFERENCE. The REAL difference and appeal to the eye. All you did was turn this from an argument to graphics and aesthetic appeal, to a dick fight between the PS2 and the Dreamcast. Whatever you say. Nice yoru bro.
