I memorized it and did fine.

It looks long, I know, but just at least memorize the first word of every line because it helps you remember the rest of the words.

Stupid and pointless if tou ask me. LaFontaine's Fables is master poetry, and that's exactly where the problem lies. The structure of the sentences are counter-intuitive for those who are trying to learn French, and a good part of the vocabulary is out-dated.

I remember reciting them blindly in first grade, and even though French is my first language I didn't understand half of it, let alone the moral advices they carry...
