Border Patrol agents can check the citizenship of a person with one of the enhanced driver's licenses, which were created to comply with the federal Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative.
Only U.S. citizens can obtain an enhanced driver's license.

These driver's licenses are intended to speed border crossings because they contain a radio frequency ID that can be read up to 20 or 30 feet away. [Identity thief dream come true]
I refuse anything that can wireless transmit my info, i dont care if you intend my info to be used for border crossing it will be stolen by hackers, if i am forced to carry one of these cards i will destory the RFID

Think this is a defacto national ID card? Try GLOBAL! The United Nations
ICAO, is laying out the framework for a global network in which all these new ID cards will be compatible. Quite a few countries have already signed on to this. Google search: ICAO PKI
The private corps working on this project are companies like CoreStreet Ltd.

Futon360.. good point! As foreign travelers enter the country (north america) will their ID's be just as "secure"? Why demand this on your people before focusing on where the threats are coming from?? Good point!!

And from the department of homeland security it states and I will cut and paste - "Appropriate radio frequency shielding (a Faraday cage) will be provided to travelers as an effective way to prevent any issues with skimming and the impractical tracking"
My question is - what is skimming and what makes tracking practical?
How's this for practical? Issue cards to NON US citizens that enter our country. They are required to have it on their person at all times or face stiff penalties. Track them!

yeah its voluntary for now. Then it will be the only driver's license. then you will all have a nice little microchip to track your every movement. but dont worry! It will have the most stringent of security measures in place. It will not reveal personal info about you. just "a number" .
