Damn, I never knew he had this kinda fire!
Steinbrenner was stupid for firing him after that magic 103-win season in 1980.
I was happy to see him win the WS in '85. God Bless You, Dick - and God Bless Napper! (his dog, he posed with him when he got the Yankee job!)

.... and, he was right. the royals won the West in '84, and, of course, they won it all behind Bret Saberhagen and George Brett in '85.

Howser did a whale of a job in 1980 with that Yankee team. He maneuverered it to perfection. He had plenty of veterans like Pinella, Murcer, Nettles, Oscar Gamble, Bob Watson, Jim Spencer & he blended in youth like Ruppert Jones, Bobby Brown Rick Cerone, Joe Lefebvre & others just beautifully. Many of the vets still thought they were everyday players. Howser, in a strong but unconfrontational way, told them things were going to be done his way because the club would be better off. They were.

@DaCaptain924 i agree, but you're going to see that umpire again, especially back then before the leagues were centralized. seems like you'd want to just as a matter of common sense.
-
@tmason83 well, apparently that umpire didn't have a problem directly calling out the royals right in their manger's face. i wouldn't expect DH to apologize. umpires/referees need to be held accountable too.

i wonder if he ever apologized. seems like you'd have to after directly calling out an umpire like this.

Interesting side note, when this took place, KC was in last place (obviously). This was in June 1984 and wouldn't you know they won the division title that year. He was right, they were an organization that knew how to win and they did!
