On Tuesday August 19, an event was held to honor Jane Bovard.

Bovard was a champion for North Dakota's pro-choice movement. In 1974 she started the first abortion counseling and referral hotline. In 1975, she founded the first state chapter of the National Abortion Rights Action League (NARAL) and in 1981, she opened the first abortion clinic in the state, Fargo Women's Health Organization. Her legacy continues now with the Red River Women's Clinic located in downtown Fargo.

TRANSCRIPT:
I seem an unlikely candidate to ever run, let alone own, an abortion clinic. I was the oldest of seven children, the mother of four children and a preacher's kid on top of it. *laughter*
But some of the values that I learned from my parents early on were that I should always treat other people with respect and that I ought to do what I could do to make the world a better place to live.
