The media is the powerful means in which a bunch of powerful few utilize in order to control public opinion in their favor.

In the hands of nationalists, the media glorified Phelps to protect our egos. In the hands of conservatives, the media smeared Phelps to quell what they thought represented liberalism.

Phelps was just the media owners' highly visible puppet.
