This is a video I put together in memory of the beloved "71" who passed away in 2008 at the PAWS sanctuary where she lived a life that she would not have had otherwise if PAWS did not take her in as an infant and provide quality care for her. 71's death was the result of internal organ damage caused long ago by malnutrition and neglect as an infant. She was the victim of government culls in Africa, where her mother was shot, and she was destined to become a circus elephant until PAWS stepped up to the plate in an attempt to save her. 71 lived to be 26 years old at the PAWS sanctuary, which is about half the length of a captive elephant's normal average livespan, but still more than anyone ever thought she'd last when she was an infant.

This video is dedicated not only to Pat Derby & Ed Stweart, who raised 71 and saved her life, but also to Jonathan Bays; an elephant keeper at paws who was deeply affected by the loss of 71, as she meant a great deal to him and will always remain in his heart.

  • Thank you for this beautiful tribute. I have suffered from pancreatitis since birth 44 years ago. One day I feel like I can conquer the world and then the next I'm in the hospital. It's what prevented me from traveling to PAWS until this past April 4th. I was devastated when I found out last September. I always thought I would come see her. May you rest without pain sweet 71.
