Richard Lester know what's he on about. I noticed that DVD/Blue-Ray has created that let's tell every how they made their tricks in filmmaking from making of to director's commentaries. It think it should be about how to tell a story and to either enchant, amused to scare or to thrill.
@TheShockMaster You are right, but it is true with all aspects of life. We forget we are, each one of us, a unique individual with ones own experiences. But there are institutions with an axe to grind who'd like to manipulate us to clones of one another. I for one am convinced a bad original is better than a good copy.
There's some truth to that too, certainly. The quote that I most often remember about film-making comes from Quentin Tarentino, though. Somebody once asked him if they should go to film school to become a director. He hastily said not to. He said that the best film school is to get a budget together and try to make a movie on your own without any guidance. Practical experience, he believes, is not only the best teacher, but the best way to create a unique movie-making style.
If the story's captivating, you're too distracted to look for the seams. That said, everybody can see all the wires in every one of your movies.

But those who want to make films have to learn the ropes. And to them that is more enjoyable than to some one who is just being entertained.
