Six Sigma is a continuous improvement method that focuses on the elimination of defects by controlling the variability inherent to your system or process. A process is a series of steps or activities that are employed to accomplish a task or goal. The Six Sigma methodology is comprised of five phases that ensure that the process improvement is of high quality and relevance. The five phases make up the DMAIC (pronounced - dee-may-ick) process. DMAIC stands for Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control. By employing the six sigma approach, the benefits of six sigma can range from quality improvement for a single product line to a complete business over haul to satisfy existing customers or acquire new ones. The six sigma methodology can be applied to any process that generates defects or that could benefit from improved quality management. Six Sigma is highly rooted in the statistical analysis of data, and six sigma has a strong focus on customers and their needs.
