Rosanna Arquette introduces new up-and-coming hopeful Steve Coogan at the Prince's Trust concert 'A Royal Gala' (tx: ITV, 30/07/89).
A pretty nervous, lacklustre performance from Coogan. Luckily, Michael Palin pops on afterwards to introduce Wet Wet Wet...
Coogan is a hard working guy who has natural talent backed up by hard work and what looks like a real interest in people. He hails from Prestwich in Manchester I think from a big family with 4 brothers and all I can say is I love everything he does especially Pail Calf and Alan Partridge.

Interesting to see how Coogan had a much more posh elocuted voice at this point in his career. Maybe he put it on like he did with all his impersonations..

'haps this says more about the event.excessive laughter unwarranted. its how british families were coralled into blank servitude for years. luckily choice today puts blisteringly odd moments like the queens christmas speech, and duff laughing practice like this pretty much in perspective.

Rather amusingly, his Al Pacino sounded quite a lot like John Shuttelworth's agent Ken Worthington LOL

OMG he is so clever.

I love how good the Al Pacino impression was yet it went right over the heads of the entire audience. Stand up in 80s variety shows could be much less pacey, filled with awkward silences, and you could get away with it. The Larry Hagman impression would've seemed the most topical, and it was a damn good one.
