The Bicycle Coalition held a party on the South Street Bridge approach at 8:45AM on the last day of the bridge's operation. A couple of speakers made some wistful remarks about their fondness for the bridge and their hopes for the elegance of the replacement design to the shivering throng. It was just below freezing point, but there was minimal wind and no precipitation. We then rode each way back and forth before heading off to our various strivings.
I really have given in and accept the fact that some people won't see beyond "University City" when they look west of the river, but I just can't see the point in preceding this term by the adjective "historic" when it has been recently invented. And the bridge? It connects all the neighborhoods west of the river to all the neighborhoods down town, not just Center City. Seemed like a weird thing for a politician to say.
Other than that the whole occasion was really sweet, including bakfiets juke box playing music from the time the original bridge was built.
Cool, again.
