I don't want to be a smartass but, in dog behavior, if the leader leaves food behind, it usually mean the others can have it. when you came closer to him, he stops because he think you (the leader) are still hungry and leaves you room to eat, not because he is ashamed of what he did (that's human emotions), but as soon as you leave, that's the signal for him to go for it!
Im other words, don't leave food behind! In dogs language it means: you can have it, leader doesn't want it!
