In "Memories," like "The Things Our Fathers Loved," Ives recalls past experiences. Both texts have been written in the present tense, demonstrating that memories are a living part of the present. Written in 1897, "Memories" consists of two contrasting sections, each a short song in itself. The first section Very Pleasant, pictures two children eagerly waiting for the curtain to rise in the "opera house." The rapid movement conveys a sense of wide-eyed anticipation, impatience at having to wait, and nervous tension as the two children "whistle and hum and beat time with the drum." The second section, Rather Sad, paints a nostalgic picture of an ["opera house"] singer's uncle who always hummed a little wordless tune as he went about his daily activities. Together the melody and accompaniment create a sweetly poignant character [study].
