The year 2008 marked the 90th anniversary of women obtaining the right to vote in Canada. Learn how the franchise for women was achieved in this Telling Times documentary.

After Confederation in 1867, all women were excluded from voting: it was the law.
In 1916, Manitoba was the first province to give women the vote.
On May 24, 1918, the majority of Canadian women were given the right to vote. Immigrants of Asian origin and their descendants, certain religious groups, as well as Inuit and Aboriginal peoples were excluded. It wasn't until 1960 that all women over the age of 18 were given the vote.

  • @marymaryinma Canada is a better country, and I'd much rather post videos related to Canada over the US. Plus, I actually like the US President, but I hate the Tea Party. They are a bad example to the world.

  • `McClung was a supporter of the then popular social philosophy of EUGENICS and campaigned for the STERILIZATION of those considered "simple-minded". Her promotion of the benefits of sterilization contributed to the passage of eugenics legislation in Alberta`

Nice one Adolf....I mean Nellie McClung

  • @solensdatter2 sin(pi)

  • thanks for this info

  • women have much smaller brains then men, therefore they don't deserve to vote. no one has the right to vote. after all, the US constitution does not explicitly give the right to vote. it only protects against discrimination. nonetheless, i don't trust anything that bleeds for five days and doesnt die.

  • What is the series that you posted these clips from?

  • @PrObamaAntiTeaParty responsible spending. bad for the world? What's bad for the world is racking up trillions of dollars worth of debt, forcing your citizens in poverty and then blaming other countries for trade imbalances.
