Edmond Hall and his Quartet performing IT HAD TO BE YOU in Jazz, recorded in 1944. Sorry about the pops, this was recorded from a cracked COMMODORE record shop 78 rpm record. Not too bad. Enjoy!

  • Great vibes. Teddy Wilson on piano? or who is it?

  • Billy Taylor plays the bass on this one ? The Dr. Billy Taylor ?

If you are not just talking about his growling but indeed the fat sound with an edge, I would suggest investigating big bore horns - vintage Selmer (which Hall used for a long while) or Conn. Really fat in the lower register, brighter up top...

  • Does anybody know how Ed could get that "edgy", sharp sound out of his horn? Is it a metal clarinet or did he work on his reeds in a specific way? I've been trying to get that sound but got nowhere.

  • Maravilloso, muchisimas gracias.
