It's my favourite film ever. The character of Cool Hand Luke is just amazing and no one, I mean no one could have pulled it off as well as Paul Newman. Immense movie, immense soundtrack, heartbreaking at times. It will forever be a classic and watched at least 2-3 times a year by me. RIP Paul Newman.

thats an oversimplification. remember when the boss breaks Luke? that scene and the aftermath is where we see the disconnect between the other prisoners' (and likely the viewers') idealization of Luke and the real Luke. Luke is impulsive and shortsighted by nature, he doesn't live by a creed or ideal.

Cool Hand Luke is about integrity and clinging to your values no matter what. "A man's got to go his own way."

At the end one of the prisoners said, "I've got no chains." But in reality he has the chains and Newman is the one with no chains- because his mind is free.
