If you got lucky and found a $3 per mile load, you could earn $9,000 for a 3,000 mile trip. You want your trips to be east / west instead of north/south. Its about 2,500 miles from LA to NYC. A team can do that in 2.5 days. We leased a truck and were paid 84 cents per mile and earned over $10,000 per month. I made more money driving a truck than I did working as an engineer!! I hope this helps. This post was too long so I had to divide it into 5 posts. Read the bottom post first.

If you own your own truck and broker your own loads it is possible to earn $2 to $3 per mile. Driving for a trucking company you will get paid about 30 cents per mile. So, 30 cents per mile time 3,000 miles would be $900 per week. If your wife drove also, you could put $1,800 per week into your bank account. If you owned the truck and found a load paying $2 per mile, you would earn $6,000 for a 3,000 mile week.

Your goal should be to own and operate your own truck; that's where you can make gorilla money...or lose gorilla money if you don't do it right. You will not know enough to make this step into truck ownership until you have driven for several years. Read everything you can get your hands on about operating a trucking business. At this level, you are not driving a truck, you are operating a trucking company so you have to be smart and know your stuff or you will lose your shorts.

We have seen many fatal accidents along the highway that were the result of drivers doing things the wrong way and many of them just don't know any better because they were not trained properly. In addition to the driving school, I would recommend that you get yourself into a Smith System class. What about the Money? You will make decent money the first year or two, but you can make a lot more once you have gotten 2-3 years experience.

They are okay to work for and they keep their trucks hospital clean. Now, all Stevens trucks have APU's so you don't have to run the truck to have A/C or heat. APU's also keep the truck battery charged. Their driving school is excellent. I may be alive today because of the safe driving techniques pounded into me at Stevens Driving Academy.

The trucking business is a good business and very stable, but it is a very difficult business since you will be away from home all the time. My wife and I drove as a team and Stevens didn't have team miles. Their trips are all set up for solo drivers. A solo driver can only go about 3,000 miles a week. So, as a team we needed 6,000 a week and Stevens couldn't do that.
