Greg Moore's Fatal Crash (FONTANA 1999)

Afther the first caution flag due to RICHIE HEARN crash this race was restarted at the lap 10 whit MICHAEL ANDRETTI in 1st, JUAN PABLO MONTOYA 2nd and MAX PAPIS in 3rd, meanwhile they three were crossing in the turn 3, suddendly the TV camera changes the view and shows a PLAYER'S FORSHYTE's car flying and crash very violent, no one knowed if was GREG or PATRICK until the camera changes the view again and shows PATRICK CARPENTIER's car on the racetrack.
GREG MOORE was transportated to the LOMA LINDA HOSPITAL where he was pronounced death due to masive head internal injuries.

I seem to remember a replay of the crash from the reverse angle at turn 2. I only ever saw it once, 13 years ago, from the original broadcast on the day. Every rerun or clip I've ever seen has never shown it, but I know ESPN did show a replay. The car just kind of went out of control and took off. Almost like a Peter Dumbreck crash, but the car only really skied after it hit the grass. The impact was brutally sickening, the original live shot from turn 3 doesn't do it full justice. Just awful.

I've thought about that reverse angel portion of the broadcast a lot over the years. I was watching this live when it happened and remember it well when the replays were shown. My only guess is that is showed the cockpit hitting the wall so violently that it has been scrubbed from available video. Such a tragic end to a great driver.

he was deep in the pack, so his car is subjected to all the dirty air from cars further ahead of him, coming off of turn two the cars rear end could have gotten light, due lack of downforce or very turbulent air.

Regardless the back end must have slid at some point and with the amount of HP they were running. Little bit of wheel spin and suddenly he's no longer in control.

It was a shame he had a bright future. R.i.p Greg

It was a sign, his scooter crash. He was not supposed to start, that's so obvious! That is very, very weird, his scooter crash. Think about it...

It was replay a bit when it happened. Once the broadcasters went silent about it and the replays stopped, I knew Greg as dead and they were putting a tribute together. I said as much in the IndyCar USENET group.
