In 1956, the few people who had their own refrigerator, had to pull really hard on the door to open it.

The technique of using rubberized nylon and magnets to close and to keep closed the door meant that it was a very tight and hard fit.

In fact foot pedal devices were featured on some refrigerators to allow for opening -hands free.
