Episode 2: The Fifth Ape

Aired: August 11, 2008 on Channel 4, Richard Dawkins presents the ultimate guide to Darwin and his revolutionary theory of evolution by natural selection which Dawkins considers the most important idea ever to occur to a human mind. In this powerful three-part polemical series, Dawkins explains who Charles Darwin was, how he developed his theory, what it is, and why it matters. He reveals how Darwin changed forever the way we see ourselves, the world and our place in it, and hopes to convince us that "evolution is a fact, backed by undeniable evidence" According to recent polls four out of 10 British people still believe in God as the creator of the universe and everything in it. As a scientist, and Britain's best-known atheist, Dawkins believes that such people simply dont know enough about the evidence for Darwin's entirely natural explanation of life on Earth evolution.

  • I don't know, reading some comments on various youtube videos and CNN stories would give some powerful evidence to the theory that some people are still stuck at the common-ancestor stage

  • His answer to the pastor could have been better. he could have said. "There is no ultimate goal. But the general goal with evolution is to adapt, so as to survive."

  • @calsonick Africa is a continent. With poor areas and better off areas. Please be ignorant elsewhere.

  • hahahahahahah

  • Africans are fascinating people they always seem so happy despite having so little.

  • 0:05 hello grandpa

  • I don't like the idea of creationism, but at least the bishop listens, takes in and has a respectful discussion, unlike that horrible woman Wendy Wright. Maybe he gets laid more than she does.

  • Wow. You really think I actually said that? I NEVER say I know one way or another. Maybe if you actually read what I said in stead of skimming through looking for something to disagree with you'd know that all but one of the four "arguments" you stated aren't accurate.

Please re-examine my comment. Notice the words like, "possible," "maybe" and "seems."

Also, you should read up on the usage of quotation marks. Misquoting people can lead to all kinds of trouble.

    "Appeal to incompetence."

  • Please examine your reasoning.

Your first argument is "it is possible that there is a purpose, therefore there must be, and it is stupid to say there is not."

Your second argument is "there might be a purpose we cannot understand."

Your third argument is "It is in our nature to need a purpose, therefore it is likely we have one."

Your final argument is "I cannot imagine there is no purpose, therefore there is."

The collective name for these is "Appeal to Ignorance".

  • Nobody fully understands the mechanics of the universe. It's stupid to say there is no "goal" in evolution because it's possible that there is. Maybe we're one step toward the final product of a goal that's beyond our understanding.

It seems in our nature to need some sort of purpose so it's easy to assume that we fabricate our own but it also seems unlikely that there is no purpose at all. It's almost impossible to imagine there being no purpose at all.
