I go to the Watkins Glen Cup race every year and you're right they're not quite as loud but when they pass you at full speed on a straight they're close. I think the variety of different engines and sounds makes up for it though. Each car sounds different and it really keeps it interesting. I would definitely suggest experiencing it in person though. Lots of fun.
