Kalani demonstrates how to create a echo activity with half the group while the other half keeps playing a groove. - From the Together In Rhythm book and DVD by Alfred Publishing.
@djembedrumming: I have been asking that question for about a year!! Any luck finding the answer?!? They look perfect for the work I do. Let me know. They almost look like a Brazilian-type drum.
I had the honor of serving as a host for Kalani at the Georgia Music Educator Convention a few years back. Drum circles are not only 'musically educational' experiences. His presentation was for the educators (the toughest group to teach sometimes).
This is outstanding for team building, education outside of straight rows, and therapy for stress relief and physically feeling better! Can't help but smile just listening :)
He has been at the ANU in Canberra (Australia) along with some other well known drummers doing a rhythms festival with me and about 200 community members and we're performing at the Olynmpic torch relay tomorrow. Kalani's shaved his head since this DVD was made.
I have been to one of his workshops at a conference and I think he is absolutely amazing. He didn't say a word the entire hour and a half which was fine because he is fabulous to watch. I can't remember if he ran the drum circle later that night but I know it was huge and it lasted for at least a couple of hours. It was such an awesome experience. Now that I have a few drums in my classroom, I have tried some of his techniques and the kids love it!
