This lesson describes the Dorian Pentatonic Scale and how to use it to improvise over IIm7 chords and iim7-V7 chord progressions. The lesson also shows how to use Mode I of this scale to solo over the chord changes to "Misty". References to my book, "Jazz Guitar Soloing Concepts: A Pentatonic Modal Approach to Improvisation" and my website:

are also provided. I am also happy to answer any questions you may have at my email address (rlemos@calstatela.edu). Thank you for your interest. Ron

  • I'm a rock man not jazz but wanted to say a big thank you for your book on pentatonics...it's the best out there - I got it 1 month ago have started introducing the ionian, dorian and myx modes within my normal M and m pentatonics. It breaks you free & gives great melodic ideas. Also I use not just 2 patterns but slides, 3 notes per string etc. Outstanding piece of work all rock players should buy! Please do some more videos on the more unusual pentatonics to help us...Happy New Year

  • Hello borgilskye, I deeply appreciate you sharing you highly positive feedback with me. You seem to have a very good understanding of the concepts and whole basis for the book. It is intended to expand and develop YOUR style, as opposed to copying someone elses. I have several other videos planned but just not enough. Feedback from guitarists like you motivates me to find the time. Best wishes for continuing success. Ron

  • I like your video, and nice playing. I couldnt help but notice, is that a gibson Johnny Smith guitar? Johnny Smith happens to be my favorite jazz guitarist.

  • Hello iamJROD. Thank you for your nice comments. The guitar is a 1997 Gibson L5. I purchased it new at Guitar Center. I have several archtops but the L5 is my favorite. I recommend that anyone buying a high-end jazz guitar to try one out. No other guitar feels or sounds the same. The Johnny Smith is a totally different guitar and since they are so expensive, you should try before you buy. I also love Johnny Smith. I have most of his records and continue to be amazed by his playing.

  • I didn't find this lesson helpful

  • Thank you Ron taking the time to write me your wise encouraging words. I will wait with anticipation for further examples from you...If I had to pick a topic for you to cover it would be pentatonic substitutions, another aspect of your book I am trying to explore. There are many, many months of hard work just for me to get a few of your inspiring and simply laid out ideas fluently into my ears and fingers!
