  • Agreed. Thanks you for having an intelligent conversation. This type of discussion I find is rare. I look forward to working with people such as yourself.

  • Totally agree. There is a small window of opportunity for early adopters to have cheap fuel for a while. However the move to ethanol and biodiesel has already started to affect grain prices. So you'll be paying more for bread and beer and pump diesel still won't be cheaper. It's a complex interaction and these comments are too limited to discuss it properly.

  • I understand your Point of View, but we have to have some hope and independence of thought. We shouldn't accept on face value what others say. We can try to make a difference. In years to come I think we will see a shift in consumer thought which will drive a cost shift. By the way, there will never be a silver bullet.

  • Correction, biodiesel and ethanol can power vehicles, but there is not enough alternative fuel to power all our cars. I personally run a ethanol van (built by Dodge) which has run on 10 to 95% ethanol since 1998.

  • Well, engineers like myself have been looking at lifecycle costing for too long to be in any hurry to accept the latest silver bullet. I've had 23 years of working out what things really cost.

  • No one said that biodiesel or ethanol can power our cars. However every little bit helps while engineers like myself work on more sustainable technologies. Also big engines and heavy metal are not the most powerful and safest technology but the cheapest with Saudi Oil and Chinese steel. We need to drive carbon fiber, aerodynamic, electric vehicles. These CAN run on only 1 to 2 gge (gallon of gas equivalent unit) a day.

  • But the scale just isn't there, they don't use enough oil. I burn about 25 gallons a week, restaurants don't use that much oil, 4 gallons per customer per day.

  • Restaurants are more than willing to give away the waste veg oil. In my area, restaurants pay big waste management companies to haul it away at a per barrel cost. If a biodiesel enthusiast disposes of it for them for free then the restaurant benefits.

  • Y'know, this rhetoric that biodiesel is free fuel is disingenuous. It relies on restaurants being willing to give away waste oil, but they paid for it. It take a lot of artificial fertilizer to make that vegitable oil and that fertilizer is made using fossil fuels.
