The great Tap Dancer Dr. Jimmy Slyde and Musician Roger A. Reed decided to record Slyde's tapping in 2000, and the project remained under discussion right up to the time of Jimmy's death in 2008. This test recording, made in February, 2000, is a part of that unfinished project, and demonstrates the sheer power of Slyde's feet, an element rarely mentioned alongside his tone, musicality, grace, and of course, wisdom. For those only familiar with Slyde's public performances, it will be a revelation to hear the relentlessness of his workouts, which he called "stumblin' around." He was 72 at the time, recovering from Achille's tendon surgery, and was readying himself to go on tour with Savion Glover's show "Footnotes." Audio with photos and video of Jimmy and some of his friends. Some photos by Tom Pich. Thank you, Tom.
