On April 1st, 1915, during World War 1, a French pilot flew over a German camp and dropped what appeared to be a bomb. The German soldiers fled, but after no explosion for a while, they cautiously approached the bomb, to find it was actually a large football, and had a note pinned to it that said "April fools!".
