The Target Corp. got the rights to name the field under a 25-year partnership agreement.

The Minnesota Twins have reached an agreement in principle on a 25-year partnership with Target Corp. that includes the right to name the team's new ballpark Target Field, the team announced today.

The 40,000-seat stadium will open in the downtown Minneapolis Warehouse district in time for the Twins home opener in the spring of 2010.

The Major League Baseball team also will collaborate with Target Corp. on the design of Target Plaza, a pedestrian bridge and public gathering space connecting the ballpark with downtown Minneapolis, said Kevin Smith, a Twins spokesman.

Financial terms of the agreement were not announced.

"We are honored to be their partner," said Jim Pohlad, one of the Twins' owners. "Our state is lucky to have many businesses that provide outstanding support and commitment to our community, but none do it better than Minnesota-based Target."

The Minnesota Ballpark Authority, public owner of the $517.5 million ballpark, is overseeing design, construction and operation of the stadium and plaza, Smith said.

In addition to naming rights for the ballpark and plaza, the Twins and Target will work together to develop an array of marketing and promotional programs, Smith said.

The new ballpark is the second local sports venue named after the retailer. The Minnesota Timberwolves of the National Basketball Association play in the Target Center, a couple of blocks away from the new ballpark.

  • my dad got to tour it and he said the grass has like a heater under it so it'll be able to melt the snow. it'll be okay =).

  • what will we do when it snows?

  • That is still going to be a sweet stadium. Cause they were mainly focusing on view than number of seats.

  • 0:47 is what it will look like

  • That stadium looks earily similar to the Phiilies Stadium

  • Some of those are not even the right images!
