Growing a Giant Clam

Giant clams are increasingly rare on Fijis coral reefs. They are big, brightly colored, unable to run away and tasty. Fijians hope that farming giant clams can help to repopulate reefs by transplanting them onto protected reefs. Once enough calms have been transplanted, they can naturally repopulate the surrounding area.

One possible downside with using iron is that it inhibits algae growth, which some clams do eat. The goodside with clams are better grade seawater. Most filter feeders will collect alot of heavy metal in their gut...sort of a preemptive self sacrifice for the benefit of everything else living around it

It is not know how long it takes for a clam to reach maturity. Unlike many invertebrates, giant clams must reach a large size before they can produce gametes. Depending on species this could be anywhere from twenty to fifty years.

they are so pretty. clams are also yummy :) but we need to harvest properly to be able to sustain future generations with clams
