the sound quality doesn't seem as good as the other videos, but holy jeebus this is stunning

Epic performance.

This was absolutely beautiful. How chilling and mysteriously beautiful at the same time.

I remember having to cough during the concert and just holding on for dear life. lol As soon as the conductor put his hands down I coughed, and I could hear the people in the balcony chuckle a bit. I think they thought I was going to pass out . I was so embarrassed :)

i imagine they just wanted to share the part to give more people a chance to play stuff. i use an alternate fingering for the G, so it's not so scary :)

That does seem to be the case. Curious that the principal second didn't take the piccolo part. It is quite a taxing piece, but I don't think endurance would have been a problem. It is a fun duet to play although I still have nightmares about that last G hehe :)

it looks like the 1st and 2nd flute parts were doubled (and sat on the other side of the piccolo player), so the person who was doubling 2nd flute played the 2nd picc part out of the 2nd flute part, instead of having the principal 2nd player take both the flute and picc parts. just my guess, though.

Far out.

Strong, wild gestures by conductors and soloists go along with their personality. IMHO we have to respect that. The important line to draw is when the gestures do appear artificially exaggerated or affected. Young performers, aware of the current power of the media, sometimes tend to exaggerate and appear affected (e.g.Lang Lang). In this case, Dudamel's gestures don't seem affected to me, but part of his personality. Even the well respected Mitsuko Uchida makes gestures that seem strange.
