You shouldn't criticize 118 because they made a better robot than you, you should look up to them.
They have many dedicated mentors, and the team works longer hours than you think. The result of this is robots that are simultaneously student and mentor designed, but appear to be designed solely by professionals.
118 has a lot of resources, and a lot of mentors; beating them is a challenge, but it's a goal you can work towards. No one is stopping you from getting similar resources.

Team 118 is probably one of the best teams in Texas, as those of us in Cryptonoite Robotics (Team 624) have learned time and again at the Lone Star Regional. Hopefully we'll win this year (for the first time). 118, good luck and we'll see you at Lone Star.

I've been using this video in my art classroom for the last two weeks with the 4th grade. We're doing a unit on robots and the students LOVE this video.

This question doesn't need to be hypothetical. Shadow, we hope to be in St. Louis... if you are involved in FIRST, why don't you stop by and ask our students how much involvement they had in this robot and what they've learned by working WITH their mentors to build it. I'm sure they would be extremely happy to talk to you about both, and maybe you'll learn a bit about how FRC partnerships are supposed to work. What team did you say you were from again?
