i received a masonic handshake once from Lord Nicholas Windsor at a private art function in bromley. no pinkies though just a slight twist of the hand to the right as i remember. Dr Tumblety was the most likely suspect but great movie anyway.

correction: Murder by Decree opened in Theaters on 2/09/79 Even so it was common place at the time to have older actors portray Holmes and Watson regardless of how old they should have been at the time. Even the superb Granada TV had Jeremy Brett playing Sherlock Holmes in his very young looking fifties with David Burke as an equally young-looking and handsome Watson.

The movie came out in 1978 I believe. Lee was born May 27,1922 and Mason was born May 15,1909. So Lee was in his middle fifties and Mason was nearly 70 years old.

Outstanding movie. Just one quibble...Lee and Mason were too old to play the parts. In 1888 Holmes and Watson would be in their middle and late thirties at the most. Holmes birth year is conjectured to be 1854 or 1855 and Watson a number of years earlier. In any case they wouldn't have been in their 60's by a long shot.

One of the greatest holmes films of all time...even if it is a pastiche.

i love this
Yup, great whistle blowing film. Check out "From Hell" (2001). It follows the same story line.
