Created by Miller Center Director and former Virginia Governor Gerald Baliles as an antidote to scripted events, sound bites, and shouting, the National Discussion and Debate Series encourages a vigorous, well-informed discussion about the issues of the day. The Miller Center's debate series champions the value of civil discourse, and the idea that people will respond to a conversation that engages them and talks to them, rather than at them. As Thomas Jefferson said, "every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle."
To further the conversation following the debates, the Miller Center's website provides research, a white paper, maps, key votes, polls, news coverage, debater bio information, lesson plans, audio and video, and links to our interactive group pages on YouTube, MySpace, Google, and others. Viewers are encouraged to submit their own videos with their thoughts and feelings about the war in Iraq and U.S. policy on YouTube.
