Is it customary that people come near the contestant while he's performing?
I'm not familiar with this kind of performance so I don't know what's normal and what's not. ;-)

this was just a normal drag show, no competition, just pure entertainment. and it is customary for people to come up to and tip the people performing, whether they be drag queens, drag kings, male entertainers, female entertainers, live entertainment, etc.
in actual pageants/competitions, however, it is "forbidden" more or less as it detracts from your talent. that and it's vaguely unethical to make some sort of profit from the competition aside from the profit you make by winning or placing
